Felydons (fell-eh-DONs) such as Hex are a native species to Akoros. After the cataclysm, a few of the feral cats of the city rapidly adapted to the newly darkened, hungry, and sunless world. Pushed to the outside of the lightning barrier due to their predatory nature, they now only reside in the Deathlands.
Felydons have three eyes, two of which are almost completely blind (the apocryphal story is that when the sun died and split into shards, the vision of Duskvol’s cats died with it as they stared into the cataclysm). Their third eye, however, provides the cats with sight. A vertical socket with a horizontal pupil rests on the center of a Felydon’s head, and serves as an exceedingly accurate viewpoint into the ghost field. Irises vary in color from bright reds, oranges, and greens.
Felydons have lithe, athletic bodies built for hunting and stalking. Their sleek, dark coats are a natural camouflage for the Deathlands, and their long limbs and tail allow them to tread silently. In addition to this, Felydons have also adopted a few traits belonging to bats. A thin membrane links between their joints and connects to the flank on their front limbs, and they have upturned, fleshy noses. These makeshift wings allow them to glide over considerable distances, though they’re incapable of supporting true flight. Their ears are slightly above average in size than that of a domesticated cat’s, aiding them in following prey and sensing sonar signals. However much like house cats, felydons still communicate with a series of chirps, growls, and mews.
Felydons are solitary but opportunistic hunters, and will sometimes resort to scavenging if a hunt proves scarce. Several rows of needle-pointed teeth aid them in their carnivorous diet. They will eat near anything: from smaller prey such as insects, blood slimes, and Lifeseeker Crows, to even larger predators that have already fallen, such as Ash Bears and sometimes Hollows. To consume larger portions of raw meat, a Felydon’s jaws can unhinge slightly to accommodate the serving. While gruesome to witness, Felydons are not always outwardly antagonistic towards humans. They are highly intelligent, and over centuries of observation have come to recognize that Deathlands scavengers sometimes mean easier access to food. As such, they’ve become popular companions for those living in the wastes that lie outside the city – should one first gain the creature’s trust.
