## Intro
Rhi: Welcome to the Void Sea. For the next two weeks we’ll be showcasing a new Blades in the Dark game, Leviathan Song. It follows the sailors on the great leviathan hunter ships as they sail the seas in pursuit of the massive immortal demons whose blood fuels the Empire. You can find the game at BladesInTheDark.com under Resources & Blades Supplements. There will be a link in the show notes.
It’s a really, really cool game with tons of history and lore, and we barely scratched the surface of it. I highly recommend checking it out.
Next month is International Podcast Month. Starting September 1, visit InternationalPodcastMonth.com for actual plays, audio dramas, non-fiction episodes, blog posts and more. You’ll be able to hear me as the GM of Mission Accomplished, a game of super spies and office politics, and as a player in Songs for the Dusk, a Forged in the Dark game about hope, rebuilding and community in a post-apocalyptic world. You can also hear our good friend Waffles as the GM of Delver and as a player in Descent into Midnight. I’ll share links as soon as those episodes become available.
Next, Minna is going to tell us about this month’s Featured Charity.
Minna: This month I would like to urge you to look for organizations providing health services and emergency resources like food pantries in your community. I will be making a donation to the St. Petersburg Free Clinic which is a multi-service independent non-profit that provides assistance with food, shelter, and healthcare to the underserved in Pinellas County. Currently they are experiencing increased need, and they are committed to continuing to provide services including a drive-thru food pantry. You can donate with me by going to StPetersburgFreeClinic.org/donate. Thank you!
Rhi: Please continue to do what you can – contact representatives, donate money, protest, educate – to fight against the seemingly countless instances of cruelty, injustice and greed plaguing our world. But also, make time for yourself. Play a game with friends, watch a movie, read a book, enjoy a meal. We can’t be angry or despairing all the time. Happiness and joy are important, maybe even more important now. It’s not just okay to step back for a little bit, it’s necessary to give yourself breaks. That’s how we keep up the fight.
Now then, let’s get started. Shall we?
## Story Begins [0:02:44]
Rhi: We open up on The Docks in Duskwall. The Docks hold a great many ships but none greater than the leviathan hunters, and as we look over the docks we see one of these great leviathan hunters pulls away from the dock, its smokestacks emanating a blue-green tinged smoke.
The sails are a deep black and are currently furled. Some might say that the sails are black as the Void Sea, but the captain, Lady Ikram Ankhayat, would say that rather they are as black as the sands of Iruvia. What she wouldn’t tell you is about the runes and wards embroidered in black upon the black sails, runes that appeal to demons for safe passage and good fortune. That sort of thing is frowned upon in Duskwall, but Lady Ankhayat isn’t originally from Duskwall.
Her ship, the Steadfast Star, is owned by the Noble House Dunvil, and it is setting out as it has done for a great many seasons to hunt a leviathan, one of the massive immortal demons that float throughout the Void Sea. Their blood is what fuels the Empire.
Where do we find the two of you on the ship as it sets out from Duskwall?
Kim: Isabelle is on the deck. She is gathering up some lines and looping it up and making sure it’s put away properly.
Rhi: Okay, and tell us about Isabelle. What is her full name? What does she look like?
Kim: Yeah. So Isabelle Rhodes is broad-shouldered, like average height, maybe 5’7”-5’8”. She has this really massive shock of red hair and she’s heavily freckled. Lightly scarred, like a little bit on her arms and face.
Josie: Oh no.
Kim: She’s been on ships her entire life, and she’s super used to just fending off leviathans and spawns and all that stuff, so she’s a little scrappy looking. She wears a deep V kinda plain shirt with high-waisted pants, just some standard boots, and yeah that’s it.
Rhi: All right.
Josie: Well, first of all I’m gay.
[laughter]
Josie: Second of all, Ahavah I think is maintaining the weapons. I don’t know if leviathan hunters have a whole array of harpoons or cannons or anything.
Rhi: Yeah, there is an armory that is kept very locked down, because there’s a lot of different factions and gangs on the ships and you don’t want those people to be armed. [chuckles]
Josie: Right. I’m in there checking on that stock and maintaining them and cleaning them out a little bit.
Rhi: Okay.
Josie: I’m also using the opportunity to look for some sort of walking stick to lean on. She doesn’t seem to need it, but she usually has one.
Rhi: Okay.
Kim: Huh.
Josie: On ships where it’s allowed she just straight-up carries a harpoon with her. [laughs]
Rhi: Heh. It is not allowed on this ship.
Josie: Ahavah is a slight Iruvian woman, has lots of scars across her face and body and arms. She also has a penchant for the deep V shirt, although in this case it’s more of the looser frilly kind that you traditionally think of pirates as wearing.
Kim: Yeah, Isabelle’s is not frilly at all.
Josie: Right.
Kim: It’s very utilitarian.
Josie: With the loose sleeves and the like.
Kim: Oh yeah.
Josie: But then also tight high-waisted pants and long boots.
Rhi: Nice. Yeah, I think that’s kind of… A lot of folks on the ship are wearing similar sorts of gear. It’s all very utilitarian.
Yeah, so the ship sets out into the Void Sea. The master augur is reading the nightly movements of the stars to zero in on the location of a leviathan. Some things that you’ll kind of… Are either of you, um… Have you been on this crew long or are you both new to the crew?
Josie: I think Ahavah is new.
Rhi: Yeah.
Kim: How long has this crew been around do you think?
Rhi: A while.
Kim: A while? I would say Isabelle is not super new, but she’s definitely sailed on the Star a couple times. She, you know, has her circles and she’s made her way around the crew.
Rhi: Okay. So, what Isabelle will have seen and what Ahavah will quickly learn is there’s a few different groups operating on the ship. One, if either of you are at all familiar with the politics of Duskwall…
Kim: Nope!
Rhi: …you will quickly learn that the remains of the gang The Red Sashes have a lot of members here. Their gang was apparently wiped out mostly in Duskwall, and since Lady Ankhayat is herself Iruvian she offered her ship as sort of a… both an escape from Duskwall, and the gangs trying to wipe them out, and also new work, so there’s a lot of Red Sashes onboard and they are deeply loyal to the captain.
There’s also a number of members of the gang The Fog Hounds. They’re smugglers. Sometimes when criminals get caught in Duskwall they are not sent out to the Deathlands or sent to prison, they get put on a leviathan hunter to serve their sentence there. They tend to get the worst of the worst jobs. I think this might be why, Ahavah, you’re a little bit higher in rank even though you’re also new, because you joined up voluntarily, you’re not, you know, prison scum basically.
Josie: Right.
Rhi: There’s also a couple cults. One of them is one that both of you would be familiar with from being on leviathan hunters in the past, The Unbroken Sun. That’s the name of the forgotten god that this cult follows. A lot of their rituals and worship are tied around the destruction of demons and other supernatural entities, so a lot of them just tend to join up with leviathan hunter ships, because by hunting the leviathans and killing the spawn they are serving their god.
Josie: [chuckles]
Kim: Okay.
Rhi: So, they’re a pretty common sight on leviathan hunters. They tend not to cause a lot of problems. Most people are fine with them. You know, they make good defenders during the harvest. The other cult is The Closed Eye. This one seems to be unique to the ship. I don’t think either of you have encountered it before. You’re not super clear about what their cult is about. They’re a very insular group, and pretty much everybody who works under the master augur is part of this cult.
From what you see after a few nights on this ship is that all the members of this cult will go up on the deck, take a lot of drugs, and just have these group visions and dream states where they just sort of ramble off whatever they happen to be seeing, and the augur will take notes and use that to help locate the leviathan. They use that as part of their predictions.
Kim: That actually sounds dope as fuck.
Josie: Yeah.
Kim: How do I sign up?
[laughter]
Kim: Like me myself, Kim. Isabelle and Blaire don’t need to do this, but I am interested.
Rhi: [laughs] But yeah, they seem to be kind of part of the group that is helping to track the leviathan. You’ll also notice this ship doesn’t have a dedicated doctor.
Kim: Oh.
Rhi: It’s just sometimes there are gaps in the crew and at present there is not a master of medicine onboard. Unfortunately, this means that if anybody gets hurt or ill it defaults to the master augur, and nobody really wants the weird creepy alchemist scientist to be responsible for your medical care, because…
Josie: [laughs]
Kim: Yeah…
Rhi: …it’s like 50-50 odds if you’ll actually get treated or if you’re gonna be used for some kind of experiments.
Kim: I love Dref Wormwood.
Rhi: [laughs] Basically. So, the ship sets out, the days pass—as much as you can tell that they are passing, you really only see the sun briefly at dusk and dawn—and Lady Ankhayat, the captain, runs a pretty tight ship. She is the sort of person that’s easy to be loyal to. She is very confident. She’s very charming. There’s rumors that she used to be a pirate herself. You know, she deals with problems that arise swiftly but doesn’t seem to be cruel about it. People who cause problems are locked in the brig or knocked down to, well, the chum lottery, but it’s always pretty fair. People understand why somebody’s being punished.
Kim: Yeah.
Rhi: So there’s not a lot of… There doesn’t seem to be anybody on this ship who wants to mutiny, which is nice.
Josie: [laughs]
Rhi: Most leviathan hunters are not run so well. What kind of things do each of you get up to during this first week or so at sea?
Kim: So, one of… not one of. Isabelle’s vice is gambling, so she spends a lot of time just playing craps and cards and dice and drinking and just fraternizing with her fellow crew members.
Rhi: Yeah.
Kim: Arm wrestling.
Rhi: That’s an easy thing to find, people who are happy to join in those sorts of games as well.
Kim: Oh yeah.
Rhi: Josie, what does Ahavah get up to?
Josie: This is actually slightly different characterization than I was thinking about, but I think I like this better. I think I kinda want to establish myself as sort of a Long John Silver type.
Kim: Oh my God.
Rhi: [gasps]
Josie: You know, just sort of friendly and smiley and full of stories. I want to gain a reputation for telling stories?
Rhi: Yeah!
Kim: I like that a lot.
Josie: But I kind of have a specific goal here. I want to share lots of tales of leviathan hunts and other things at sea, maybe things they haven’t heard of before, with the goal of making people a little bit afraid.
Rhi: Did you have any ideas about stories that you wanted to tell?
Josie: Yeah. I wanna tell stories of like monsters that aren’t leviathans or leviathans that do things they’re not supposed to be able to do and stuff.
Rhi: Yeah.
Josie: And generally kind of make people a little wary, like “well are we gonna encounter that on this one? That doesn’t sound real, but…”
Rhi: Yeah.
Josie: You know, something that maybe isn’t disturbing in the moment but when they lay down to sleep it’s like, oh wait a minute. [laughs]
Rhi: Yeah. “Ohh, that sounds bad.”
Josie: Uh-huh. [laughs]
Rhi: Do you tell the story of what happened to your ship?
Josie: I think I do but in the third person. I definitely tell at least—I definitely tell several stories of The Red Serpent, so some of these stories may be familiar to Isabelle.
Rhi: Yeah. I think… I’ll leave it if Isabelle overhears one of these stories or maybe overhears somebody talking about The Red Serpent.
Kim: Yeah. I feel like the first time it happens where Isabelle overhears this is that… I like to think that she’s in the background working on something or checking up on something, so she’s only half listening, half paying attention, but her ears still kind of perk up. She’s like, wait a minute.
Josie: [laughs] I kinda like the image of Ahavah crouched down in a gambling circle only halfheartedly participating because she’s too busy telling the story and Isabelle is right behind her with her back turned and is like “huh?”
Kim: Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Rhi: [chuckles] Yeah. So I think that over the course of the first couple weeks of this voyage the two of you don’t necessarily interact directly much.
Kim: No, not too-too much.
Rhi: But you… I think Isabelle particularly, just in conversation you’re hearing about that leviathan a lot more than you expect.
Kim: Yeah.
Rhi: It’s weird how much it’s coming up. As the days and nights at sea go by, eventually the master augur says that they have narrowed in on a particular leviathan. It is one named—So…
Josie: Mm-hmm?
Rhi: The leviathans are immortal.
Kim: Yeah.
Rhi: And they all have unique appearances. So, they are known to the captains, like their behaviors, what their spawn are usually like, where they can often be found, and they all have names and epithets. So, the master augur shares with the crew that you all are hunting Sogmoroth, the Godless Prophet.
Kim: Oh, I fucking love that.
Josie: Geez! That’s metal as hell.
Kim: That is so good.
Rhi: I can’t take credit for the Godless Prophet, that was in the book, but I was just scrolling through the descriptors and I got to that and I’m like, oh that’s it, that’s badass!
Josie: Mm-hmm!
Rhi: So what you kind of learn about the Godless Prophet is, like all leviathans, it is massive. Most of them, when you see them, they resemble islands. This one is like a perfectly circular island, and it has a hard upper shell like a nautilus, and it’s said that if you walk the shell kinda following the spiral of that shell all the way inward to the very center, without stopping, without straying, if you do that the Prophet will give you a vision. But of course that’s just a story, nobody has ever done that, because to walk across a leviathan without being stopped is impossible.
Kim: Right.
Rhi: So, that is the one that you are hunting. You now have a specific target. About three weeks after you set out from Duskwall, I think that the two of you are both on the deck, not super close to each other, not working together, just on the deck doing your own things.
Kim: Mm-hmm.
Rhi: And the two of you, and pretty much everybody else on the deck and on the ship, notice something strange, and it takes a second to kind of pin it down. You’ve grown so used to the sound of the engines, the way that the ship vibrates ever-so-slightly as they rumble under your feet, that it takes a second to realize that what you’re feeling that’s weird is the engines sputtering and stuttering.
Kim: Oh, that’s not good.
Rhi: It’s not, and so, quickly everyone rushes to the rail to look over, and what everyone sees are these massive barnacle-like creatures that have latched onto the hull. They are like… you couldn’t necessarily easily get your arms around one. They’re huge, you know, several feet across. They are layering onto the hull of the ship, and you’re guessing, from where the two of you are standing you can’t necessarily see, that they are getting into the engines, getting into the blades.
Kim: Mm-hmm.
Rhi: So, very quickly the sailing master, Ignazio Whitesmith, strides onto the deck and starts barking commands, pointing at people, telling them to lower the sails and to get out the harnesses. The two of you, through coincidence, have ended up standing next to each other, and each of you gets a harness thrown to you along with some kind of scraping implement, and you are told to harness up, lash yourselves to the rail, and go over the side and start scraping these things off just like everybody else on the deck.
Josie: Yay~ [laughs]
Kim: Yup.
Rhi: So… [laughs] The two of you are going over the side together. Your harnesses will hold unless rolls start going badly. But yeah, this is kind of your first challenge, getting down the side and starting to deal with these things.
Kim: Okay! Uh… what are we rolling?
Rhi: I think first you’re gonna need to roll something to kind of maneuver down the side of the ship, safely and slowly and carefully.
Kim: Would that be a Prowl?
Josie: Yeah, that makes sense to me.
Rhi: Yeah, probably Prowl. It’s gonna be risky. I’m gonna say greater effect, because you do have these pretty decent harnesses that you’re working with. What kind of weapons do you think that each of you were thrown? Like, I don’t think this is something that you picked, this is just whatever somebody from the quartermaster’s crew tossed at you.
Josie: I like the idea of a big whacking stick. [laughs]
Kim: Ooh, I know.
Rhi: Yeah, what are you thinking?
Kim: Isabelle is given a machete.
Rhi: Nice. Yeah-yeah, they would absolutely have machetes.
Josie: I got a 4.
Kim: I rolled, [disappointed groan]. I rolled double 1s.
Rhi: Ooh, okay!
Josie: That’s not good.
Kim: No! No, don’t say “ooh, okay!” That’s not okay.
Rhi: So…
Kim: I hate this.
Rhi: So I think, Kim, your harness, like, you’re kind of belaying down on rope a little bit, basically…
Kim: Yeah.
Rhi: …and something happens with the knot that you tied up on the rail, and you start slipping down very quickly. I think you manage to catch it and stop yourself, but you are like right above these barnacles. You’re very close to them, and you’re the only person kind of within their range.
Kim: Yep.
Rhi: So you are going to be, I think, in a desperate position on your next roll, because you’re kind of the only juicy target around.
Kim: [grumpy] Mm-hmm.
Rhi: Ahavah, you are able to move down more slowly in a more controlled way. I think I’m gonna just give you reduced effect. I think you see this person next to you go shooting down the side and you’re like “ooh, I’d better be really careful,” and so you go much more slowly down the side than you would otherwise, so you don’t wanna go shooting down towards the barnacles.
Josie: [laughs] Right.
Rhi: Yeah. So yeah, you’re still a ways up on the ship. Isabelle, what would you like to do about these very large spiky things that are scoot-scoot-scooting towards you?
Kim: I think she’s just gonna hack away at them and try to get them away from her, so would that be a Skirmish?
Rhi: Yeah!
Kim: Okay. Good. I’m good at that.
Rhi: Yeah, so this is gonna be desperate, standard effect.
Kim: [flustered noises] All right, I got a 4?
Rhi: Four, okay. You do it but there’s a consequence. So I think that you manage to hack away at one of them and slash into it, and it oozes this sort of pearlescent blueish blood as it falls away…
Kim: Oh… uh-huh.
Rhi: …and from the rail above you hear…
Rhi (as ???: [shouting] Get boats out! Get the spawn!
Rhi: …and you see boats being lowered, because they’re gonna be collecting these corpses.
Kim: Right.
Rhi: But that’s not your job.
[laughter]
Kim: No.
Rhi: And I think in that moment of distraction you look up at that shout. One of the other… I’m calling them barnacles, but in my head they look like giant sea urchins, just kind of scoots closer to you and then lunges forward and pierces you with a bunch of the barbs.
Kim: Hmm! Can I resist that?
Rhi: Yeah. It’s gonna be level 3 harm.
Kim: Okay. What am I rolling to resist? Prowess?
Rhi: Yeah.
Kim: Okay.
Rhi: Let me read… Penalties from harm are one level less severe.
Kim: Okay yeah, 4.
Rhi: Four, okay, so you’re gonna take 2 stress, and that will… So, the way that I’m reading this ability is that the penalties are lower, but it still goes…
Kim: Right.
Rhi: So it’s gonna go in the level 2 harm slot, but you’re taking… you will have less effect.
Kim: Have lesser effect. All right, I’ll make a note of that next to it.
Rhi: So I think that, you know, it lashes out with these barbs, and I think instead of you getting impaled through your torso you manage to twist and they scrape along your back and some of them hit you in the arm, and then you manage to swing out of the way. Ahavah?
Josie: I think seeing that Isabelle just got stabbed I kinda want to not outright jump but drop rapidly the rest of the way just with my stick outstretched so I can just use gravity to smack this thing off the ship.
Rhi: Nice! Yeah, yeah, you can definitely do that. Or you can try to do it.
Josie: I am good at Skirmish. We’re stabby girls.
Kim: We are stabby girls.
Rhi: Yeah, I think Skirmish would make sense. Risky position, standard effect for this.
Josie: Okay. I got a 6.
Rhi: Nice! Yeah. Tell me what this looks like with you whooshing down from above.
Josie: [laughs] I think, seeing Isabelle go over the side really quick, I took a few moments to make double-sure mine was secure and start lowering down slowly, but now that I see people are getting stabbed, especially her, I’m like all right, so I just sort of loosen my grip on the rope a little bit and drop down rapidly, not caring about the rope burn…
Rhi: Mm-hmm.
Kim: Oof.
Josie: …and then just with my stick pointed down so it just slams into the urchin.
Rhi: Yeah! With a 6 you crash into this thing and it goes flying off into the sea.
Josie: And I think… now I’m next to Isabelle, and I’m like:
Josie (as Ahavah): A little out of practice, huh?
Kim (as Isabelle): Shut up and help me take care of these things.
Josie (as Ahavah): Geez, bossy.
Rhi: [giggles]
Kim: She’s under a lot of stress right now.
[laughter]
Rhi: Does Ahavah recognize Isabelle?
Josie: Yes, I think so.
Rhi: Okay. Okay.
Josie: She probably would not have gone out of her way to defend anyone else on the ship…
Rhi: Yeah.
Kim: Mmm! Yeah.
Josie: …but she’s like, okay, I know this person. [laughs]
Rhi: All right. So, I am—I should have done this when you two got down here. I’m gonna start a clock, a 6-tick clock, that 2 are filled in right now. The two of you need to fill this clock to clear your section of hull.
Kim: Okay.
Rhi: Barnacle urchin things are… It’s tough going, because as soon as you knock one off another one…
Kim: Just crawls on.
Rhi: …inches, oozes its way up the hull to take its place. Around this time there’s kind of a shudder through the ship as the engine shuts down completely, because they can’t clear the blades while the blades are moving, so the ship is, right now, dead in the water which is an eerie thing out here. You do have sails, so if for some reason the engines don’t start again you’re not gonna be totally stuck.
Kim: We’ll just be at the mercy of the wind, really.
Rhi: Yeah. It’s still not a pleasant feeling to feel those engines turn off.
Kim: Oh, no.
Rhi: But yeah, you’ve got a whole bunch of critters. You’ve got stabbing and poking implements. Have at it.
Kim: Can I just roll Skirmish again? Because I think that all that Isabelle’s gonna do is just keep on hacking away at these things.
Rhi: Yeah! So, I will say, if you’re just going after one it’ll be risky standard, if you would like to go after more than one you can kinda describe how you wanna try and do that and I’ll adjust either the position or the effect accordingly.
Kim: Yeah no, that’s fine. I’ll go for two. I don’t mind.
Rhi: Okay.
Kim: Because what else could go wrong?
[laughter]
Rhi: How do you want to try to get two of them? Do you wanna, like, slash at one and kick one? Do you wanna try and do a big wide sword sweep?
Kim: Ooh. I was imagining just really grand sweeping gestures, but now that you put the idea in my head I really do like kicking one and slashing at one, so I think I wanna do that instead.
Rhi: Okay, so that is going to make it desperate-standard, because you’re basically sticking your leg into this mass of spines.
Kim: Oh wait, you’re right. Hmm…
Rhi: It ups the chances that you’re gonna get hurt.
Kim: Yeah. Okay. I think I’m just gonna stick with the machete then.
Rhi: Okay, but you’re still gonna try and get two?
Kim: Yes.
Rhi: So that’ll be risky-reduced.
Kim: Okay, that’s fine.
Rhi: You are, as always, welcome to push yourself to try and increase your effect.
Kim: Hmm… no. [chuckles]
Rhi: [chuckles] Fair enough.
Kim: Not yet. I’m gonna wait until the leviathan gets here for that.
Rhi: Yeah, that’s fair.
Kim: [groans]
Rhi: Yeah?
Kim: Highest was a 2.
Josie: [seethes]
Rhi: Oof.
Kim: So I hope you all enjoyed Isabelle Rhodes. She’s gonna die now. She’s about to go overboard.
Josie: [laughing] Oh no!
Rhi: You have so much stress and harm left. You’re fine. What you don’t have is a sword.
Kim: No, no, I only have a really big knife.
Rhi: One of them—Well, you had a machete, now you don’t have a machete, because I think—
Kim: Where’d it go?!
Rhi: Well, they took it!
Josie: [laughs] They just took it.
Rhi: I think that you slash down into these urchins and one of them, as you’re slashing down, the spines just curl inward and catch around it in this cage, and then it twists and just rips it out of your hands.
Kim: Oh… uh-huh. Oh, I don’t like that.
Rhi: So you’ve harmed both of them.
Kim: But now my weapon’s gone.
Rhi: Unless like… It is reasonable to assume that basically everyone on this crew—You’re not allowed to carry weapons openly. It’s fair to assume everybody has a boot knife.
Kim: Hmm. All right.
Rhi: So you can have a boot knife.
Kim: All right. Should I mark off a blade or two or something? We didn’t go over load.
Rhi: This isn’t really the quote-unquote “score,” so you’re very limited in what you can have on you. It’s kinda you got the weapon that you got handed and you can have a boot knife.
Kim: Okay.
Rhi: So, if you wanna mark, you can mark a blade or two and then have a second boot knife. [laughs]
Josie: I am thinking about handing my stick off to you if you want it.
Kim: Aw. All right, well, let’s just play it by ear. We’ll see how it goes.
Josie: Okay.
Kim: I can go with either.
Rhi: Yeah. So, there’s two that are harmed but are still clinging onto the hull. One of them has a sword. [laughing] I’m just picturing now the Roomba with a knife taped to it.
Josie: [laughs]
Kim: I’m picturing the knife crab.
Rhi: Oh! Even better, yes! Yeah, absolutely.
Josie: Oh! I kinda like the idea that they are crab-like under there but they’re just covered in a big semispherical shell of spikes.
Rhi: Yeah!
Kim: God, these things are so cute.
[others laugh]
Kim: They are!
Josie: Ahavah says…
Josie (as Ahavah): Huh, clever little beasties.
Josie: …and then she hands her stick out to Isabelle as though “do you want it?”
Kim: I think Isabelle does a double-take. She glances between the staff and Ahavah for a second before she just, yeah, she accepts it and takes it.
Josie: And I think… I think I am, now, gonna use Terrible Power.
Rhi: Cool.
Josie: Because I just want to, just like, grab into the nearest urchin thing and sort of the Terrible Power effect being like ideally when they try to stab me the spines break rather than me.
Rhi: Ooh, cool! Yeah, I like that.
Josie: And I just wanna wrench it off the ship.
Rhi: So, you are gonna be… You’re just going after one?
Josie: Oh, I can go after two. I think since I am reckless I am going after two.
Rhi: Yeah, so… I think that because you’re using your superhuman strength this is gonna be risky-standard.
Josie: Okie-dokie. That, [squirms], yeah that’s a 2. Sure is.
Kim: [sighs]
Rhi: Yeah, the dice really don’t like the two of you today, huh? I think that you are gonna end up in a desperate position as they… I think they quickly realize, these things, that they can’t pierce your skin, so they just start covering you and trying to pin you to the hull. Like, your face isn’t covered, but you had grabbed two of them and they basically flip around and just have you pinned.
Josie (as Ahavah): Ah fuck, not used to this one yet.
[laughter]
Rhi: So you’re gonna be in a desperate position. Isabelle, what would you like to do? Your companion here…
Kim: I have a stick.
Rhi: You do have a stick, and your buddy is pinned.
Kim: I think Isabelle’s gonna return the favor and just try poking at the one that has Ahavah pinned.
Rhi: Yeah, go for it.
Josie: Or at least one of the ones that have me pinned.
Rhi: Yeah. If you can get one of them unpinned that’ll get you out of desperate, because then you’ll have a hand free.
Josie: Mm-hmm.
Kim: Yeah, no, I’m gonna just go for one and I’m gonna push myself, just because the dice have fucked me over so many times today.
Rhi: [laughs] Yeah, fair. So that’ll be risky-standard.
Kim: All right, that’s 4, 4, 2.
Rhi: Four, okay. So, you swing over and bash this club into one of them, and it detaches but not cleanly, and Ahavah is gonna take harm as this thing kinda rips at her arm as it falls away.
Josie: What kind of harm are we talking?
Rhi: I think level 2 harm.
Josie: Okay. I’m gonna Prowess resist it if I can.
Rhi: Well, so it’s, uh… it’s Isabelle’s consequence.
Josie: Ahh.
Kim: Right.
Rhi: So, basically you can decide, if you resist that, you can knock it off more carefully or change your approach in some way to make sure that Ahavah doesn’t get hurt, but Isabelle is the one who has to roll to resist.
Josie: I see. You don’t have to if you don’t want to.
Kim: No, I do.
Josie: Okay.
Rhi: Okay. It will be Prowess since this is a physical thing that you’re doing, so go ahead and roll that.
Kim: [uneasy noises] A 2 and a 1.
Rhi: Ooh! Okay.
Kim: What the fuck is happening today?
Josie: Ah!
Rhi: [laughs] So, you can choose if you wanna do this, but you would take 4 stress.
Kim: Fuck. We don’t even have the leviathan yet!
Rhi: Here’s the thing. You will have an opportunity to roll to clear your stress before you hit the leviathan.
Kim: Okay, that’s good.
Rhi: Yeah. You’re gonna be on the ship for a little bit more before you get there.
Kim: Okay. So what are my options, 2 or 4 stress?
Rhi: You would take either no stress and Ahavah takes level 2 harm or you take 4 stress and Ahavah takes no harm.
Kim: Hmm… Josie, do you feel strongly one way or another?
Josie: I actually think me taking harm will have a cool story moment.
Kim: Ooh. Okay, then let’s do that. I’ll take no stress and let Ahavah take the harm, then.
Rhi: Okay. So yeah, this thing gets ripped off your arm and just tears at your skin as it goes, crashing back down into the sea. And Ahavah, what happens?
Josie: So it’s level 2 harm?
Rhi: Yeah. Your arm’s all hecked up. You can write that down however you want. [laughs]
Josie: So vampires start with a stricture and they get more as they become more powerful, so it’s kind of like a vampire weakness. I took Bestial. Whenever you suffer physical harm or overindulge your vice your body twists into a horrific bestial form until you next feed without overindulging.
Kim: Ohh…
Josie: So I think what it looks like is her getting sort of the fangs and eyes and ears of a bat for a little bit, because you know, that’s classic. So she kinda loses her smile and gets really angry and that fucking happens.
Rhi: Yeah.
Josie: Then she’s gonna try and lash out and get the rest of them off her.
Rhi: Okay yeah, there’s only one that’s still got you pinned.
Josie: Mm-hmm.
Rhi: So just going after that one will be risky-reduced.
Josie: Okay.
Rhi: Because it does have you partially pinned, so you’re limited in what you can do.
Josie: Okay. I think I am gonna use Terrible Power to just yeet it off the ship.
[laughter]
Rhi: Yeah, go for it.
Kim: “This bitch empty!”
Josie: [laughs] Yay, I got a 6.
Kim: Finally.
Rhi: Okay, and with Terrible Power that is gonna push that effect up to standard, so you are at 4 out of 6 for clearing the hull. You do indeed I think just reach over and grab this thing by the spines and chuck it.
Josie: [laughs]
Rhi: Like, at this point boats have hit the water and are scooping up the fallen dead spawn and harvesting them. There’s a couple angry shouts, because the one that you throw just goes way outside the range of where they’re patrolling.
Josie: [laughs]
Rhi: It’s like they’re kind of within 20, 30, 40 feet of the ship, and this just goes (whoosh) off into the distance, and they’re like “we’re not going after that, fuck you!”
[laughter]
Josie: Okay, so here’s the thing about feeding. It technically happens during a downtime thing…
Rhi: Yeah…
Josie: …but flavorfully I don’t see why it can’t happen on the fly.
Rhi: Yeah.
Josie: So can I describe something that would be feeding and then I just don’t gain the effects until things die down?
Rhi: Yeah, I think so.
Kim: Welcome to Flavortown.
Josie: Because Ahavah doesn’t want to go back onto the ship with her beasty stuff out. I think she’ll just look up at Isabelle and say:
Josie (as Ahavah): Thanks Izzy, good lass.
Kim (as Isabelle): Izzy?!
Josie: [laughs] Yup, and then just tap her on the leg in a comrade-ly fashion, but I think when Isabelle is next able to see that part of her there’s gonna be a scar there.
Rhi: Let me real quick, just wanna check and make sure. Kim, are you okay with her feeding?
Kim: Oh, yeah-yeah-yeah.
Rhi: Okay. Just wanted to check on that. But yeah.
[chuckling]
Rhi: I think that the, you know, calling you Izzy and calling you good lass that your old captain on your first ship used to do.
Kim: Yeah, and she’s very confused by that, because nobody really calls her Izzy.
Rhi: Yeah.
Josie: [laughs] Here’s my question. Did she like to be called Izzy back then or was it a thing that the captain did that got on her nerves?
Kim: Eh… both.
Josie: Okay.
[laughter]
Rhi: All right, you’ve got 2 more ticks to fill to clear the hull.
Kim: I mean, all I can do is just keep bonking these things.
Josie: Bonk.
Kim: Bonk.
Rhi: Yeah. Now, you do still have, Ahavah, you can assist.
Josie: Yes.
Rhi: You can take a point of stress to help if you would like.
Josie: I think I am gonna do that.
Rhi: Devil’s Bargains are still on the table.
Josie: Uh-huh!
Kim: Not yet.
[laughter]
Rhi: All right, so you’re gonna take a point of stress to help Isabelle with this next one?
Josie: Yes.
Rhi: Okay, so it’ll be risky-standard and you’ll get an extra die.
Kim: Okay, finally! Okay, 4, 5, 6.
Rhi: Nice! Okay, so a 6.
Kim: The curse is broken, hopefully.
Rhi: [laughs] Yeah, how does… first Josie, how does Ahavah assist with this?
Josie: [laughing] I almost kinda like the idea of, you know when you go up behind someone and restrain their arms so someone else can whale on them?
Rhi: [laughs]
Josie: [laughs] I kinda do that.
Rhi: Grab this thing by the spines and then Isabelle just whack, whack, whack, whack.
Josie: Yeah.
Kim: [laughing] Yeah.
Rhi: Yeah! SO that’s gonna get you to 5 out of 6. Isabelle, you wanna go and finish this off?
Kim: I do.
Rhi: Or not Isabelle, sorry.
Kim: Oh, sorry.
Rhi: Well, either of you can finish this off. You just need to clear one more.
Kim: You go ahead, Ahavah. I just went.
Josie: Okay.
Kim: Do the honors.
Josie: I think I am going to be just, after I help Isabelle beat the shit out of one, I’m gonna pull up a little bit and then just start kicking them off, like downward, stomping them.
Rhi: Yeah, so risky-standard, and yeah, go ahead and make your roll.
Josie: I got a 5.
Rhi: Five, okay. So yeah, you successfully manage to kick one of the last ones off. The rest of the crew have dealt with these equally as well. You can see a few torn frayed ropes hanging where some people weren’t so lucky and went down into the sea with some of these creatures, but you know, for the most part the crew’s intact. You knocked all these things off. The boats are out scooping them up. This is actually kind of a relief because it means that you’ll be able to use these spawn to chum the waters and you won’t have to have any of the crew draw lots to get thrown in there. Sometimes that happens.
Josie: Mm-hmm.
Rhi: But for your complication, or your consequence rather, Ahavah, you look up as this last one falls and you see at the rail, looking down, arms folded, just staring at you really intently is the master augur, Sasha Orlovich, who is the one who’s been, you know, they’re the creepy Whisper type on the crew, the one who’s been doing all of the rituals to track this leviathan, and they are just staring at you with this look of intense focus and interest.
Josie: I think Ahavah looks back up at them just blankly for a minute, blinks twice, and then flashes a toothy grin. [laughs]
Rhi: [laughs] I think Sasha just kinda nods a little and walks away from the rail. Then some of the folks who stayed on the deck will help. You know, they’re hauling all of you who were on the ropes back in. They’ll pull you up, and as people are getting back up you see Sasha is conversing with the captain and the captain nods and announces in a voice that carries easily across the deck that this is an outer defense of the leviathan and we’re getting close, and a ragged exhausted cheer goes up from the crew.
Josie: [weakly] “Yay…”
Rhi: [laughs] Yeah. [weakly] “Woo, it’s gonna get worse…”
Josie: [laughs]
Rhi: So, the engines rumble back to life and the ship moves forward again. This time everyone can feel there’s a change in the air now that everybody knows that we’re close to the leviathan. There’s a sort of electricity to the air almost as people are mentally, physically getting ready for this. Some people have rituals that they do, some people are just spending more time with their friends, some people are spending more time alone, but the ship feels different now that you know you’re close.
Kim: Mm-hmm. Yep.
Rhi: So, this you can basically treat as downtime. You can do a couple downtime actions.
Kim: I mean, I only have 4 stress. I feel like if I indulge my vice I might overindulge.
Rhi: I think that’ll probably just mean you owe somebody money, which…
Kim: Won’t affect me in the long-term.
Rhi: …you won’t really have to resolve this session. Yeah. [laughs]
Josie: Yeah. [laughs]
Kim: Okay. All right, yeah, so I’ll roll to lower my stress then. Okay, yeah, I definitely overindulged. I rolled a 6, which is fine.
Rhi: Okay. Yeah, I think you get in a little bit too deep with somebody and now, basically, whenever you get paid someone is gonna be standing behind you with a hand out.
[laughter]
Kim: Yeah, no, that’s fine. I think she’s used to that, honestly.
Rhi: Yeah. So you owe somebody some money. It happens. Ahavah?
Josie: Well, I think my first action is to make sure I have an unusual weapon ready, and I think it’s gonna be a hand harpoon.
Rhi: Okay, so you’re trying to acquire an asset?
Josie: Yes.
Rhi: I am gonna say… I think for acquire asset, rather than—so normally you would roll your crew’s tier. You don’t really have that right now, so I am instead gonna say roll whatever skill you use to pull this off, like if you’re finessing it out through stealth, if you are charming the quartermaster into letting you have it, whatever your approach is just roll that skill.
Josie: That latter one sounds good.
Rhi: Yeah. [laughs] Is it gonna be Sway?!
Josie: Yeah, and it’s a critical on two dice.
Rhi: Good God.
Josie: [laughs]
Rhi: Okay, yeah, you’ve got a hand harpoon. Are you thinking—So, what I’m imagining is that it’s like, it has a collapsible shaft so you can hide it under a jacket…
Josie: Mm-hmm.
Rhi: …and then just pop it out to be regular size.
Josie: Ah, that’s cool. I also rolled to indulge my vice, because that’s what feeding is.
Rhi: Mm-hmm.
Josie: It gives you 4 ticks on a healing clock, so that automatically bumps my wound down to level 1 harm.
Rhi: Great.
Josie: But I did also overindulge, and the way Bestial works is it comes out whenever you overindulge your vice.
Rhi: Yeah. So after all of this, I think that probably the two of you get separated by your various duties for a little bit after the ship gets underway again, but eventually Isabelle has lost some money, Ahavah has obtained a stealth harpoon… How do the two of you find each other again, and where do you find each other again?
Kim: Uh, if I may…
Josie: Uh-huh?
Kim: …sort of set the scene, I’m kind of imagining that Isabelle is below deck now and she’s by her bunk and finally got a chance to kinda, you know, patch herself up a little.
Josie: Mm-hmm.
Kim: And I don’t know, Ahavah just maybe walks in or whatever, maybe our bunks are close to each other.
Josie: Yeah, I think she comes by. You know that thing where if there’s a low ceiling or a beam you kinda lean forward and rest your arms on it?
Kim: Yep. Yep.
Josie: [laughs]
Rhi: I’m picturing… So, you know, this is basically a whaling ship, you don’t have a private room…
Josie: Right.
Kim: No, no-no-no.
Rhi: …but I think that what it is, they’re kind of broken up into little cubbies, so there’s like hammocks or whatever your bunks are, but you’re only sharing a room with maybe six, it’s you and five other people in this little cubby instead of the entire crew.
Kim: Right.
Rhi: So it’s still everybody’s cramped in together, but I can sort of see that where, like, all of your bunkmates are elsewhere currently so you’re alone in your room…
Kim: Yeah, definitely.
Rhi: …and there’s like a cloth over the doorway that can be pushed aside or drawn across.
Kim: I like that.
Josie: So, I think Ahavah comes in and does the lean and says:
Josie (as Ahavah): Everything okay, Izzy?
Kim (as Isabelle): Don’t call me that. I’m fine.
Josie (as Ahavah): Fine, Isabelle. You sure?
Kim (as Isabelle): Yeah. Yeah, I’m good. What about you? You took a beating out there yourself.
Josie: Actually, there’s a bandage over it, but you can kind of tell that her arm wound has healed up quite a bit.
Kim: Yeah.
Josie (as Ahavah): Eh, I’m fine. I can take a beating. Just, you know, we lost some people and shit, those were some nasty spawn, huh?
Kim (as Isabelle): [sighs] Not the worst I’ve ever faced, but yeah, those things are annoying.
Josie (as Ahavah): Heh. Ah, yeah, I bet. You uh… you ready to fight this thing?
Kim (as Isabelle): I will be if I can just tie this off.
Kim: I think Isabelle’s just kind of struggling to finish off an arm wrap or something, some kind of bandage or maybe something around her waist. I don’t know.
Josie: Ahavah moves in to help.
Kim (as Isabelle): [startled nervous noises] Okay? Uh… Okay.
Josie: [laughs]
Josie (as Ahavah): There you go. Should be good.
Kim (as Isabelle): Thanks… Why did you put your neck out like that for me back there?
Josie (as Ahavah): Eh, I mean, no reason not to, right?
Kim (as Isabelle): Sure? Yeah, I guess. It’s just, I don’t know, you hardly know me. I hardly know you.
Josie (as Ahavah): Yeah, but I mean, we’re shipmates. We should get along, right?
Kim (as Isabelle): Yeah, I guess.
Josie (as Ahavah): And like, thing is…
Josie: And I think at that moment her ears are gonna start twisting into bat ears again.
Kim: Mm-hmm.
Josie: …and she’s gonna just suddenly change tone and be like…
Josie (as Ahavah): Fuck!
Josie: …and just rush into the nearest swabby closet. [laughs]
Kim (as Isabelle): Hey!
Kim: Isabelle’s gonna stand up and just try to follow her.
Josie: It’s not locked or anything, so you could enter it if you want.
Kim: Yeah no. Yeah. Yeah, I think she is.
Kim (as Isabelle): Hey, listen, I’m not gonna tell anyone.
Josie (as Ahavah): [exhales] Thanks? But now I gotta figure out a way to get rid of this before we go on the hunt.
Kim (as Isabelle): How do you get rid of it?
Josie (as Ahavah): You gotta have… [mumbles] something to eat.
Kim (as Isabelle): Uh… all right. Why don’t you just head over to the mess?
Josie (as Ahavah): [chuckles] Well, you know, lots of people are gonna see me, and it’s not like “food” that I need. I’m just hungry, right?
Kim (as Isabelle): Oh…!
Josie (as Ahavah): You know that feeling when you’re hungry and it’s not food and—
Kim (as Isabelle): Oh… Oh-oh! Yeah. Yeah, mm-hmm.
Josie (as Ahavah): Oh… Wait, you do?!
Kim (as Isabelle): I do what? No. No! I… [squirms] You don’t need “food” food, you need, uh… I mean, you can tell me what you need if you want, but…
Josie (as Ahavah): [exhales]
Kim (as Isabelle): …I don’t know if I can get it for you, you know?
Josie (as Ahavah): Yeah, and I already took too much from you anyway. That’s why this is—
Kim (as Isabelle): What?! What do you mean you took some from me?! When?! What?!
Josie (as Ahavah): With the spawn. I needed to get this to go away, and you were there, and I’m sorry, and I was hoping that I could just keep this under wraps and it wouldn’t matter.
Kim (as Isabelle): No, no! We’re cool. We’ll keep this under wraps, that’s fine, but… you took blood from me?!
Josie (as Ahavah): No. No. Not blood, adrenaline.
Kim (as Isabelle): You feed off adrenaline?
Josie (as Ahavah): Yeah, and fear and anger and stuff, where people get riled up. I can just… mmm, it’s tasty.
Kim (as Isabelle): I mean, uh… I mean, I can try setting up some brawling out on the ship, but the captain isn’t really tolerant of in-fighting.
Josie (as Ahavah): Ah. Maybe you could kick someone’s ass at dice?
Kim (as Isabelle): Is that really gonna work?
Josie (as Ahavah): Eh, I mean it’ll be something.
Kim (as Isabelle): I mean, if you’re sure it’ll work then I could try. I mean, I’m already broke though. I really can’t. I already owe some shithead some coin.
Josie (as Ahavah): If you’re able to get me like a hat I might be able to cover some of this up.
Kim (as Isabelle): Yeah. Yeah, I can.
Josie (as Ahavah): On the missions no one’s gonna care fucking anyway. But now it’s my turn to ask. Why are you being nice to me? Most people are not so magnanimous about this shit.
Kim (as Isabelle): I don’t fucking care what you are. You saved my ass back there. I could have gone overboard or died and you swept in for me for no reason, so I’m just paying it forward.
Josie (as Ahavah): Heh, you’re a good kid.
Kim (as Isabelle): Did you by any chance know Captain Ahavah Markesh?
Josie (as Ahavah): Yeah! Yeah, you know what, I knew her. Last I saw she went out after that Red Serpent thing.
Kim (as Isabelle): Were you on that crew? I don’t remember you.
Josie (as Ahavah): Eh… heh. Wow, this is awkward. Uh…
Kim (as Isabelle): What do you mean it’s awkward?
Josie (as Ahavah): It’s, uh… it’s me.
Kim (as Isabelle): What do you mean it’s you?
Josie (as Ahavah): Nothing! Nothing. Just, uh, get… If you could get me a hat things will be cool. I’ll just stay in my bunk until the mission happens, and sleep, and everything will be fine.
Kim (as Isabelle): No-no-no. No. Listen, I am gonna get you a hat and then you are gonna explain some shit to me. Deal?
Josie (as Ahavah): [exhales] Deal.
Kim (as Isabelle): All right. Now I have to go find a hat.
Kim: And yeah, Isabelle just walks away and finds her shirt to put back on.
Rhi: It’s not too difficult to find a beanie cap type thing, a nice sailor’s knit cap that has some stretch to it to go over the bat ears. You can probably find a scarf too if you wanna get something to cover up the fangs. Not much you can do about the eyes, but there’s a fair few folk on here with weird eyes. I don’t think anybody’s gonna ask too many questions.
Kim: Yeah. At most maybe they’ll just guess that you’re Tycherosi or something.
Josie: Mm-hmm.
Rhi: Yeah, that’s the thing, if you had come onto the ship looking like this everyone would be like “oh, Tycherosi, whatever.” It’s the fact that you change into looking like this that freaks people out.
Kim: Yeah.
Josie: Right.
Rhi: So yeah, you don’t have to roll for anything. It’s easy enough to poke into a couple other bunks and just nab something.
Kim: Yeah. So Isabelle returns with the hat. I think she just kind of tosses it in Ahavah’s lap.
Kim (as Isabelle): Here.
Josie: Ahavah carefully tucks her bat ears up into the hat and pulls it down really, really far. She kind of flashes a fanged grin at Isabelle.
Josie (as Ahavah): Let’s talk about this in a bunk, huh? I hate hiding in the closet.
Kim (as Isabelle): Yeah! Yeah.
Josie: She gives finger guns.
Rhi: [giggles]
Kim (as Isabelle): What? … Fine, whatever.
[laughter]
Josie (as Ahavah): Yeah, I knew Captain Ahavah because I am Captain Ahavah.
Kim (as Isabelle): You survived?!
Josie (as Ahavah): Uh… no? Hence the vampire thing.
Kim (as Isabelle): No, no, I know that. But… [stammers] How did you jump into a body? We were like leagues from shore.
Josie (as Ahavah): Yeah. It was a really long way.
Kim (as Isabelle): How?
Josie (as Ahavah): I just went. I lost some shit on the journey, and I haven’t really recovered from it at all. When I feed it lessens a little bit.
Kim (as Isabelle): Were you always a vampire, or…?
Josie (as Ahavah): No. No, not until that fucking piece of shit.
Kim (as Isabelle): Okay.
Josie (as Ahavah): I didn’t think anyone came out of there as anything but a ghost. I was kinda glad to see you show up here.
Kim (as Isabelle): Yeah, apparently I’m hard to kill.
Josie (as Ahavah): Heh, well that’s a good asset to have. I wish I’d shared it.
Kim (as Isabelle): In this line of business, yeah.
Josie (as Ahavah): [chuckles]
Kim (as Isabelle): So, what the hell have you been doing this whole time?
Josie (as Ahavah): Trying to kill The Red Serpent. I managed to persuade a few more crews to get out there.
Kim (as Isabelle): You really wanna go after that thing again?
Josie (as Ahavah): We do a little better each time.
Kim (as Isabelle): Each time?! How many times have you gone after it?!
Josie (as Ahavah): A few.
Kim (as Isabelle): [stammers] What? You just sink ships, like not giving a fuck who dies along the way?
Josie (as Ahavah): I give a fuck when they die, but I’m doing this because I gave a fuck when I died. That thing took fucking everything, so this is kinda what I have left.
Kim (as Isabelle): Listen, Captain… I totally get where you’re coming from, but you’re fighting a losing battle. There is no way you’re gonna be able to go after that thing and get what you want.
Josie (as Ahavah): I have a lot of time on my hands.
Kim (as Isabelle): So does this thing.
Josie (as Ahavah): Yeah, so eventually one of us will have to back down.
Kim (as Isabelle): Just don’t let it be you.
Kim: I think Isabelle walks away at that point. [laughs]
Josie (as Ahavah): [sighs]
Josie: I think Ahavah lays back down in her bunk, pulls the hat outright over her face, and thinks about shit. [laughs]

## Blooper [0:58:10]
Kim: Your shirt tears?
Rhi & Josie: [laughing] No~
Kim: You ruined a really perfectly good shirt.
Josie: Now, I’m not Minx right now, I need not care so much about fashion.
Rhi: [laughs]
Kim: That’s true. That’s true.
Rhi: Even though you’re a vampire.
Josie: Yes. Listen, I did allow myself the baggy frilly pirate shirt. [laughs]
Rhi: Yeah.
